O2 and Carphone Warehouse have today announced that the cost of the 8GB Apple iPhone has been cut from £269 to just £169. The price cut applies on all three of the tariffs, meaning you could have an Apple iPhone for £169 and pay just £35 per month line rental – which gives you 600 minutes and 500 text messages, plus unlimited internet use.
The price cut is only going to run from today, Wednesday 16th April until Sunday 1st June so anyone interested had better get that order in quickly. And the price cut is only applicable to the 8GB version of the Apple iPhone – the 16GB version remains at £329.
The Apple iPhone has generated a massive amount of interest since its release, but a lot of people have been put off due to the upfront cost of the iPhone. Here in the UK we are used to paying for top of the range mobiles on very low cost tariffs, but we can usually expect to get a mobile for free on a higher cost 18 month contract. Apple have refused to let the phone cost be subsidised – so no matter what line rental you choose you would still pay the full cost. While £169 is still a whopping amount of money to part with, it is a good saving on the original cost.
Because of Carphone Warehouse’s Ultimate Price Promise anyone who bought their iPhone in the last 30 days will automatically receive the £100 difference. It is unsure at the moment whether o2 direct will be refunding the difference – if you have bought the iPhone from them recently I would suggest contacting them to see if they can refund the difference.
The price cut has led to much speculation that the release of a 3G version of the iPhone is imminent. Watch this space!
