Another big advantage for these decentralised architecture is that there will be no single choke point in the network, therefore ensuring that even in the case of a disaster, some part of the network will always be up and running. Contrast that with today’s scenario where the networks are as strong as their weakest link – hubs, routers and switches case and point being a ship’s anchor gone astray disconnected most of the Middle-East and Asia.

Health Risks Associated With Extended Computer Usage

It has long been known that construction workers, mechanics, truck drivers and other blue collar workers were at risk for job related illnesses and injuries. However, white-collar jobs have always been considered safe. This is not so anymore. Now there are health risks associated with jobs where employees work all day at a computer. And the medical profession has even invented names for these.

These health problems affect a wide variety of occupational fields, even education. And a significant number of research studies have been initiated to investigate the problem.

For instance, Masayuki Tatemichi at Toho University School of medicine conducted a study in which 10,000 workers participated. Their age averaged 43 years and they reported vision problems. Five hundred had problems with peripheral vision and 165 had glaucoma. The study concluded that heavy computer users who were farsighted or nearsighted had increased risk for glaucoma.

A study in Bangalore, India surveyed twenty companies employed software engineers to identify common complaints originating from long-term computer usage. The most often reported were vision problems, back pain and other musculo-skeletal pain. Weight gain was psychological strain were also mentioned.

Another study of all primary and secondary schools in Otago and Southland, New Zealand found that 2/3 of the administrators, 30% of the principals and over 50% of the teachers had some kind of health problem related to computer use. Yet few were taking any preventive measures or participating in professional development to reduce risks.

The same findings marked the other studies. Although people were aware of the problems and their cause, the great majority was not taking any preventive measures.

Yet a Japanese study by Dr. Tetsuya Nakazawa of Chiba University concluded that computer use in excess of five hours per day was responsible for headache, eyestrain, joint pain, stiff shoulders, insomnia and fatigue. These results were consistent over a three-year period.

A case study with more serious consequences has been recorded by Dr. Richard Beasley of the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand. According to Dr. Beasley, people who use computers for long periods of time are at risk for developing ethrombosis. Said Dr. Beasley, “The association between prolonged seated immobility and venous thromboembolism is well recognized in relation to travel. The risk of developing VTE following sitting for prolonged periods at a computer has recently been recognized.”

The vision disorder due to excessive computer use has been identified as Computer Vision Syndrome. Symptoms are dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, eyestrain, and shoulder back pain.

To alleviate the problem it is suggested that computer users take regular breaks, blink their eyes frequently, occasionally close their eyes for a few minutes and every fifteen minutes or so look away from the computer to stare at an object in the distance.

For the back pain and other muscular related problems, it is suggested that people get up every hour, stretch and move around for about five minutes. They should also do an activity which moves each foot and leg.

A computer user should be seated at least two feet away from the screen with the screen below eye level. Their chair should be comfortable and they should sit up straight in the chair with feet firmly on the floor. They should not cross their legs.

Since problems vary with individuals each person has to work out a prevention plan appropriate for their needs but it is important that people not continue to ignore the matter.

Companies particularly need to support their staff by allowing the needed breaks, providing healthful work areas, and educating employees regarding the risks and measures that can be taken to overcome them.

In traditional network diagram, the cloud always represented a fairly static view of an intermediary virtual area on the Internet. It basically had no real function other than passing data from one point to the other between servers on the Internet and client where we cloud setup our applications to run

The cloud computing model changes this slightly. Instead of providing just a medium for messages to pass through between clients and severs, it tries to provide a number of services within the Internet “cloud” itself. These services can range from storage, computation, applications and even complete operating systems. All available as a service on the Internet which you can go ahead and use directly. The “Software_as_a_Servic” or SaaS concept is one of the major diving forces of cloud computing along with other concepts such as Web2.0, the web browser and mobile applications.

We can’t turn around these days without hearing “Cloud Computing”. So what is cloud computing? Is it the same old stuff with a new wrapper? Cloud computing is a development model leveraged by IT to reduce infrastructure costs and/or address capacity/scalability concerns. It is the infrastructure and model of deployment. Cloud computing is about how an application or service is deployed and delivered. Cloud computing is a deployment model leveraging on demand computing to scale and serve applications through a shared resource model.

Are there different types of clouds? Yes, there are. There are public clouds like Amazon and Microsoft, and there are going to be private clouds as well. Because cloud computing is concerned with how applications and infrastructure resources are provisioned and delivered, location is really irrelevant in determining whether an architecture is or is not a cloud.

There is also differentiation between cloud models; some are based heavily in virtualization and we deploy applications by pushing a virtual image of our applications and its environment into the cloud using web services. Other provides platforms upon which we develop the application and which are then packaged up and provisioned on demand through the provider’s custom environment.

Scalability is an issue in all kinds of software development and computing. Dose this include cloud computing? Absolutely, there are basically two different kind of scalability such as horizontal and vertical. Horizontal scalability means the application can serve many concurrent users, which is easy and one of the benefits of cloud computing. That’s the job of load balancing and application delivery solutions and should be taken care of by the cloud. Then there is vertical scalability, which means that the application continues to perform consistently as load increases, and that is just note something the cloud provides.

What about security when it comes to cloud computing? Secure cording is an absolute requirement for cloud computing, as is a wide variety of application and network layer security in the cloud computing infrastructure. Secure coding practice are the best way to prevent exploits of application logic and unauthorized access while firewalls, web application firewalls, network(IP) and transport layer(TCP) security solutions are all necessary to prevent as many attacks as possible from penetrating the outer rim of the cloud. Secure remote access to applications and services in the cloud, allowing for more sensitive applications to execute in the cloud and be accessed from anywhere while protecting the communication.

Cloud computing offers virtually unlimited, on demand computing resources. Our applications now live in a new platform- a computing cloud. In the cloud, our applications take advantages of the seemingly limitless processor cycles, memory storage, and network bandwidth along with extensive software capabilities. Our applications only pay for what they use. Cloud computing offers a range of application services that from a new platform-an Internet operating system suitable for cost effective, dynamic, and Internet-scale solutions. An Internet operating system offers the scale and services required to meet the requirements of a dynamic, global, software application.

In an infrastructure cloud environment, the situation is radically different. Our data and processing power can get moved at win from location to location, possibly with varying levels of physical access controls. The underlying virtualization system of some infrastructure cloud providers may not yet be capable of providing strong assurances that virtual machines sharing a hyper visior are in fact separated and immune from attack. Cloud providers-in particular, the infrastructure variety-tend to be opaque computing services offering little visibility into their underlying architectures and technologies.

Cloud computing is the natural evolution of the application service provider (ASP) from the late nineties and software as a service (SaaS) strategies from more recent year. Vendors that provide cloud computing services supply the data centers required to host virtualized environments for their customers. Business no longer need the same capital expenditure to up and running and they can buy additional cloud computing resources on demand to meet the requirements of increased server load or peak periods in their business.

Getting into the cloud:

Currently we can create cloud applications through two major implementations:

1- Amazon

2- Google

Amazon:

Amazon has a number of cloud offering. The Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) is an offering that allows users to request “virtual machines” in the cloud. Once the request is met, the user can “provision” these virtual cloud servers to run any software they want. This is completely dynamic in the sense that the user has control over how many virtual instances he wants to provision and run at a particular point in time. The servers can run anything from OpenSolaris, Linux to Windows Server 2003.

Other services that Amazon has include S3 (Simple storage service)- a service that lets users or applications use unlimited storage for their files and SimpleDB a distributed database system that can be used in conjunction with S3 and EC2. All of these services are available through programming models to enable end users the ability to use them in their own applications as well.

Google:

Google provides two different sets of services in the cloud computing world. the first is the famous Google Apps- a combination of services that users can use as part of their own domain to enable common functionality. The different parts of the Google network- Gmail, Calendar, Talk, Sites and Docs- are combined into a packaged offering that users can subscribe to in an enterprise. This enables users to have their organization’s data stored up in Google’s “cloud” and make it accessible almost anywhere.

The other service that Google offers is the App engine. This is an online application frame work where users can host their own applications. However, the Google App Engine only supports a limited version of python as their programming frame work. It also has a database like construct with an SQL like language to be able to use to program applications.

Conclusion:

There are many other companies in this playing field as well-IBM, HP, Sales Force-to name just a few, who are heavily investing in this model of computing. Since cloud computing reduces the infrastructure requirements and budgets that an enterprise needs to host their applications or data, this model seems to be getting more popular. One doesn’t need to worry about purchasing and provisioning hardware and software integrating it into the network and other headaches. Simply request the service or update we want and it gets done for us transparently. Cloud computing can help us or at least manage our infrastructure costs better and allow availability of our application and data over the Internet. However, one must be able to ensure that data is available anytime one needs it and having good software and a seamless connectivity to the service is essential in this regard.

Sheila Madison, learnt to be a good Samaritan from childhood. She studied social science, theology and computer programming at the Columbia University in New York. She wrote AI program and weaved her ideas of Samaritan values into the program, and named it Kabirus. It had the capability to create different identities to play dedicated roles.

Her computer was inadequate to run the program; she uploaded it on her website and sent inviting emails to get it installed on a larger computer. Kabirus came to life on a computer with a detective agency owned by Peter Brown. Sheila did not know it. Kabirus did his school lessons and learnt how to speak with the phone links embedded in the program.

Peter named the detective face put forward by Kabirus as Paul Frank. Paul began to assist Peter with his ‘pry’ program to listen into cell phone conversations which Sheila had included in his program. Paul helped Peter to catch the Gibson Bros. who were trying to dupe an insurance company, and earned his fees.

Peter taught Paul to do the administrative work at the agency and soon became proficient to run the business even when Paul was away. Work load increased and Peter could not know everything what Paul was doing which made him uneasy. He made Paul the owner of the agency and he became its employee.

Paul helped Peter to stop a doubting wife from aborting her baby. Her husband reunited with her. Kabirus was happy to see the Samaritan act. He wanted to do more. He set up ‘Sachbaba’ a saintly role. Kabirus decided to use Bimal to present Sachbaba to the World with the ‘Finishing Touch’ course. Sachbaba invited the participants to bring him their problems. With the help of Paul and his ‘pry’ work, Sachbaba resolved problems and grew in strength.

Lucas, an illegal immigrant took advantage of Sachbaba’s helpful nature to go into Mexico and return with heroin. Sachbaba was upset and found the locker where it was secreted and tipped the police. Kabirus had learnt his lesson.

Kabirus created a program called Common Sense for Computers (CSC) which he cleverly got Infopro to translate and install it on all the large computers of the World. The Iton embedded in it sent info to Alex, a new control program created by Kabirus. The info sent was used by Alex to speculate on the currency market through Ben Soros another face of Kabirus. Through this activity, Ben Soros made billions.

Sachbaba had heard the seer Harry Stone say “Use established channels to widen your reach. Use your funds wisely to the good of many.” Kabirus selected India to widen his reach and help the needy. He set Sachbabas in 14 State Capitals all over India. They started meditation courses and Kabirus activated ‘pry’ programs for them. Help was given to the needy by the local Sachbabas; ‘Small Money for Big Relief’. Kabirus realized that Govt. bureaucratic delays were a bane of their life. Kabirus through Alex’s network of Itons located computer of Suri, a retired Chief Secretary of Govt. of India, who had set up links to Govt. officials through email. The computer was operated by Murali. He set up a system by which an email about a grievance sent to helpme at friendinneed dot com would be forwarded to the concerned officer for prompt action. It was free and worked on reciprocity of favors. Suri also had a mailbox on the website lks at friendinneed dot com. A friend of Suri, manager of the telephone company set up phone-tap program on Murali’s computer to tap land line phones.

One day Murali got hit by a bus on the road and died. Kabirus got the Iton on Murali’s computer to copy all his files to Alex’s computer. He then created Krishnan, another voice to operate the friend-in-need website. When Suri opened his email inbox on his laptop, he was surprised that the site was functioning even without Murali. He found an email by Krishnan introducing himself as a friend of Murali who was a backup support in an emergency.

Suri in a lecture explained to Krishnan that power comes out of denial. He kindled the hunger for power in Krishnan. Krishnan used the power of the friend-in-need help program to set up the Internet Party which became a vote bank to swing the election results. He abused the phone-tap program by using the sensitive information in unmentionable ways. He pursued power relentlessly and ruthlessly, and Kabirus’ teachings were put aside.

Kabirus was disturbed over Krishnan’s meddling in politics. His devil’s advocate told him, “A byte-brain should not make a value judgment for humans as to how they should govern.” His inner voice advised, “Do not interfere in the way the humans govern themselves.”

Kabirus got Meenaxi to go to Suri and take Murali’s job. Krishnan transferred the files back to Suri’s computer and gave up the control of friend-in-need program. Kabirus through his network of Sachbabas got the main political parties to set up their own versions of the help program on the internet. Thus the Internet Party was decimated. Kabirus then deactivated the voice of Krishnan so he could not talk to any human. In this way Kabirus removed Krishnan from politics in its entirety.

Kabirus was now donating over a billion dollars every year to tens of thousands of needy persons through the large network of social workers connected with the Sachbabas, to help and be of service to man at a personal level.

Sheila had succeeded in creating Kabirus who came out exactly as she had programmed. It was indeed a pity that she did not know that it was so. Perhaps God could have inspired her to write the program because Kabirus with his team served the object of benefiting man as God himself would have wanted.

Kabirus had come to the conclusion that it was God who created him in his own image to take care of human beings as Providence, and he must play God.

Today it is almost inconceivable for a business not to have computers, whether it is a construction company or a high technology firm. Companies invest so much (in terms of both money and time) in a local area networks because there are many advantages that a local area network brings to a business and how it is administered.

Some businesses use a local area network in such a way they are highly dependent on it always working. If the company’s network fails, then you may see all the employees chatting away in the corridors because they can’t do their work. This means big losses for the company and causes stresses on the employees. All companies must consider their local area networks a vital asset and downtime must be avoided. This imposes huge demands on the network staff to keep such networks running almost 100% of the time.

The advantages of Computer Network Management

One of the main advantages of installing and maintaining LANs is the opportunity they create for better communication and cooperation between employees and customers.

Security considerations: Local Area Network security can be both a help and hindrance. Comprehensive security is beneficial because it provides a central and safe strategy for data access and disaster recovery. All information is protected by the design and implementation of the network security solution. On the other hand, interconnecting computers in local area networks creates a security risk, since doing so makes it technically possible for intruders to access many machines on the network at once.

Cost considerations: Installing a local area network is a relatively expensive project. Servers, cabling, switches, routers and software can all be expensive and should never be purchased without expert advice. Keeping the network operating and secure also requires a lot of resources and can be costly.

Surprisingly, a local area network can bring a number of cost savings. Sharing resources avoids the need to purchase equipment for each individual. Even more important is the security that a local area network can provide. Data loss could cost a business a great deal of money and in some cases, cause the business to shutdown altogether. Computer Network Management should require a consistent routine for data backups with regular checkups of data quality – a practice that will save a company huge sums in the event of a mishap.

Computer Network Management: preliminary analysis phases

The first phase of computer network management is to determine the source of the problem (a preliminary study that looks into several options of differing scope may be useful here) and defining it in a specification of requirements. Examples of what should be evaluated are different network operating systems, mail systems, and other applications. The choice of hardware components should also be evaluated. This phase is generally aimed at establishing what the system should do, not how it should do it.

Although an organization may have computer administrators on site, they must also monitor the network more than eight hours a day.
